How to Replace the Motor and Gearbox on your Peg Perego John Deere Gator 12V

If your Peg Perego John Deere Gator 12V is having motor issues, then this handy guide will help you to diagnose, remove and replace the motor and gearbox unit from your Gator vehicle and get you back up and running. With a handyvideo below and links to any parts you may need, if you're looking for help fitting a Gator motor, you are in the right place.

First, how can you tell if your Gator's motor is the source of the issue? Gators have a motor on each rear wheel, one primary motor which operates in first gear and reverse, and a secondary motor which operates only in high gear. To diagnose which motor has failed, lift the rear of the vehicle off the ground and press the pedal in each of the vehicle's three gears. In first gear and reverse, one wheel should turn. In high gear, both should spin. If nothing is moving in first geasr or reverse, then the primary motor needs replacing. If the vehicle operates normally in first and reverse gears but only one wheel turns in high gear, then your secondary motor needs to be replaced. The motors are interchangeable, so whichever one you need, click here to order it on our site.

Once you have diagnosed the issue and you have your new motor in hand, follow the steps in the video below to remove the wheel and your old motor and fit the new one. The process will take approximately 15 minutes. if you have any difficulty, or any questions, just click here to get in touch with our friendly team of experts.

If your Gator is still not working properly or moves sluggishly after the motor is replaced, this indicates that the battery has degraded. The most common cause of battery degradation is undercharging, especially if the vehicle is regularly left with an empty or partially empty battery overnight. If this is the case, then we recommend first trying to recondition the battery with a 24 hour uninterrupted charge. If this does not correct it, then you will need a new battery, which we have at this link.

The Peg Perego John Deere Gator is one of the most durable and reliable kids' ride on vehicles on the market, and has a water-sealed base to prevent water ingress. Even so, if the vehicle becomes waterlogged, motor damage is among the most likely outcomes, so to prevent damage to your new motors, ensure the Gator is kept under cover and that after use on wet days you dry the rear wheels and the outsides of the truck bed, to ensure water does not sit on the motors.
